Presentation at Fuller Seminary
January 16, 2009
[DJ Chuang] Really glad to be at Fuller Seminary as a guest of the Asian American Theological Fellowship. About 20-some came out for the monthly meeting, and good to hear of ministry leaders eager to equip themselves to serve the body of Christ. I’ll be posting the things that I mentioned last night, and also additonal resources that would be helpful.
- Resource Center for Asian American leaders, hosted here at L2 Foundation
- L2 Foundation books: Asian American Youth Ministry and CONVERSATIONS: Asian American Evangelical Theologies in Formation
- Churches mentioned: Evergreen LA, NewSong, Quest (Seattle), Lakeview Church (Chicago), Grace Covenant Church (Philadelphia), Vox Veniae (Austin)
- List of 100+ churches reaching next gen Asian Americans
- DJ Chuang’s list of Asian American books, including quick start list of 4 books to understand ministry in an Asian American context
Below are the slides I used in my presentation, “Reaching Next Gen Asian Americans“.

So little said about the theological/cultural uniqueness of Asians and the opportunities they present. Shame based cultures do not respond well to guilt/rebellion theologies.
What is the answer to Asian misbeliefs?

Gary, thanks for your comment. In my personal opinion, the issue you raised about how the Gospel can better be contextualized in shame-based cultures is a huge under-developed opportunity. I think it’d be wonderfully transformative if concepts like forgiveness, restoration and reconciliation were possible in a shame culture, both in heaven and on earth. We need much more theological reflection and discourse to work it through.

I have taught in Asia many times and developed what I consider to be a wholistic theological approach that covers all cultures and major streams of theology.
